Midland Branch Annual Technical Debate: Safety, Competence and Accountability following the Grenfell Tower Fire
The issues raised by the Grenfell Tower fire are directly relevant to all of our activities, not just those directly related to High Rise Residential Buildings (HRRBs).
The first part of the Public Inquiry has also resulted in the Report by Dame Judith Hackitt on ‘Building a Safer Future’, the recommendations from which provide the basis for a worthwhile discussion for safety and reliability professionals (the debate will not focus on the circumstances and causes of the fire as these are the subject of the forthcoming second part of the Inquiry). Arising from the Report and subsequent discussions some issues that we expect to debate include;
- Could any of our activities be prone to, for example: not testing assumptions, ‘make it up as you go along’, ‘’race to the bottom’, or ‘’normalisation of deviance’.
- What does competence mean in this (and any other) high consequence situation and how do we demonstrate it?”
