Integration of Human Factors into Engineering Programmes
SaRS Solent Branch are pleased to host a talk by Nicola Fairburn who will discuss how Human Factors (HF) can support wider engineering Safety and Reliability activities within a typical complex procurement project. Nicola’s talk will cover the role of HF specialists in the development of procedures, maintenance error assessment and organisational design, giving some examples of where she has undertaken these activities, for example in planning of maintenance activities.
Nicola has over 10 years of professional experience providing HF support within safety critical domains, including Defence and Nuclear. Currently Nicola is working at Atkins as the Technical Authority for Human Factors within the Aerospace, Defence Security and Technology (ADS&T) business, providing oversight of the HF work conducted within ADS&T.
Since joining Atkins, Nicola has been involved in multiple projects with an aim to ensure the system is safe, efficient and fully supports the user goals. These projects include, supporting the safety case for large scale new build projects, providing Human Factors Integration for a complex upgrade to a Command and Control system, Cyber Investigations, software interface development and supporting large scale bids.
Prior to joining Atkins, Nicola worked for BAE Systems in Military Aviation, where she was involved at various stages of the product lifecycle from concept through to design validation, performing a HF Integration role on multiple projects and platforms.
